Rug Size Guide
Choosing the right size rug can make a room feel bigger, cozier, and more put-together. Here are our recommendations:
Living Room
- Small room: 8′ x 10′ — front legs of the sofa sit on the rug
- Medium room: 9′ x 12′ — sofa and coffee table fully on the rug
- Large room: 10′ x 14′ — anchors the entire seating area
- Rule of thumb: leave at least 18 inches of bare floor around the edges
Bedroom
- Under a queen bed: 8′ x 10′
- Under a king bed: 9′ x 12′
- On each side of the bed: 2.6′ x 8′ runners
- Tip: the rug should extend at least 18 inches on each side of the bed
Dining Room
- The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides
- This keeps chair legs on the rug when chairs are pulled out
- Rectangular tables pair with rectangular rugs; round tables pair with round or oval rugs
Hallway / Entry
- Standard runner: 2.6′ x 6′ or 2.6′ x 8′
- Entryway: 3′ x 5′ or a 4′ round rug
- Tip: measure your hallway before ordering — runners come in standard lengths
Home Office
- 4′ x 6′ works under most desks
- Make sure the chair moves smoothly on and off the rug
Tips
- When in doubt, size up. A rug that’s too small can make a room feel disconnected.
- Measure your space before ordering.
- A rug pad is recommended for all sizes.
